This year we present “Romeo and Juliet” in the fair South Park Green, 8:00 p.m., September 17-19, directed again by the wonderful Daniel Wilson and produced by neighbors Phyllis and Galen. The tale of star-crossed lovers is set around the time of the U.S. Civil War.

Bring a friend! We're partying on Johnson Street, first at John's house, then at Phyllis's place! (Leave us a comment if you didn't get the personal email.) Everyone is SO busy, this is a good time to chill and chat. There will be music--and dancing will even be encouraged--so bring a neighbor, a friend and a light heart.

As always, the cost of entry is a dish to share and a $5 donation to Historic South Park's neighborhood association. You do NOT have to be a HSPI member to attend and enjoy. See you there!

A lovely home in a cool neighborhood. This 2002 Silver Winner of the Midwest Design Award is a perfect example of maintaining the integrity of the original home while making it modern and breezy. Formerly a home plus carriage house-they have converted this through the effects of a breezeway to tie the two areas together creating a great master retreat & family/study room while. With a backyard designed for entertaining, what's not to love? I think we all sweated off a few pounds working on the Tot Lot this morning! As you know, the kid-sized park on James and Adams was sorely in need of renovation. The privacy fence especially was weathered and vandalized. Trees and stumps needed removing. The wrought-iron sign and the swing sets needed paint. South Park decided to show it some love. Here's the first article we wrote about it on May 12th. Plans had been in the works weeks before that.

With the determined leadership from Amy Kennedy and 100 volunteer hours in tear-out labor we are making great progress. South Park has since qualified for a $2,000 Mini-Grant from the City of Dayton based on the physical improvements we are contributing and the devotion of our volunteers. Our next step is putting up the new fence--and perhaps a few more nice touches after that, we'll see.

Please make it the destination of your next neighborhood walk. Mary Jo invites you to harvest some herbs from under the sign. And the little vegetable bed is very happy this year thanks to all the rain. Enjoy!

Most neighbors enjoy the short walk from their front door to Brown Street, the business district near the University of Dayton, to enjoy the impressive variety of coffee shops, pubs and cafes. They will enjoy it even more in the future!

The City of Dayton has accepted a $950,000 federal grant to begin to turn the area into a pedestrian friendly thoroughfare with bike lanes, more trees and less traffic congestion. You can read the entire article in the Dayton Daily News. The improvements are part of a plan to bring businesses to the area, as an incubator of aerospace technology jobs.

City officials have a vision of the Brown/Warren street corridor as a place to work, eat and play--and with South Park immediately adjacent, it becomes a wonderful work-live-eat-play proposition. As if we weren't already living in a great location!

Their energy and creativity have been a bright spot for many years now, as has their belief in the potential of Dayton.

So we are delighted to share the news that their renowned and successful salon, Square One, which they run with partner Doug Henderson, is expanding into Columbus and adding 20 new jobs to the region! And, we hasten to add, many of their employees also live in Dayton historic districts!

They set an inspiring example for the rest of us who are considering investing, or are currently investing, in downtown and creating business models based on unique experiences and outstanding service, that succeed beautifully.

Here's the article in the Dayton Business Journal.
