Okay, so U.S. President Barack Obama and U.K. Prime Minister David Cameron were not actually in Historic South Park, but close enough that we can’t resist coopting a little of the glamour of having world leaders within walking distance!! They took in the first game of the First Four. At 6:40 p.m. Tuesday, March 13, NCAA’s March Madness officially kicked off at the University of Dayton Arena. Western Kentucky University and Mississippi Valley State University took the court. Kentucky won, 59-58. President Obama and PM Cameron watched the action. The crowd included 20 University of Dayton students, who sat near the president and prime minister, and 500 family members of Wright-Patterson Air Force base personnel serving overseas. (These photos were taken by Sharon Howard, PR genius!)
Since Cameron was in the U.S. on an official state visit, Obama gave him a tour of America and its culture, which includes basketball. The event was covered by international news–especially the U.K.newspapers. Even the White House Press Secretary had positive things to say about Dayton:
We just couldn’t resist bragging a little.
