More Pedestrian/Bike-friendly Streets and Business Development Coming “Next Door!”

Most neighbors enjoy the short walk from their front door to Brown Street, the business district near the University of Dayton, to enjoy the impressive variety of coffee shops, pubs and cafes. They will enjoy it even more in the future!

The City of Dayton has accepted a $950,000 federal grant to begin to turn the area into a pedestrian friendly thoroughfare with bike lanes, more trees and less traffic congestion. You can read the entire article in the Dayton Daily News. The improvements are part of a plan to bring businesses to the area, as an incubator of aerospace technology jobs.

City officials have a vision of the Brown/Warren street corridor as a place to work, eat and play–and with South Park immediately adjacent, it becomes a wonderful work-live-eat-play proposition. As if we weren’t already living in a great location!

Neighborhood Entrepreneurs Expand Square One Salon

South Park couldn’t be prouder of our very own Brent Johnson and Joshua Stuckey, for all they’ve done to revive and promote the neighborhood, for their successful ventures that have added hugely to the City’s vibrancy and for their AIDS philanthropy. Their energy and creativity have been a bright spot for many years now, as has their belief in the potential of Dayton.

So we are delighted to share the news that their renowned and successful salon, Square One, which they run with partner Doug Henderson, is expanding into Columbus and adding 20 new jobs to the region! And, we hasten to add, many of their employees also live in Dayton historic districts!

They set an inspiring example for the rest of us who are considering investing, or are currently investing, in downtown and creating business models based on unique experiences and outstanding service, that succeed beautifully.

Here’s the article in the Dayton Business Journal.

It’s a Recycling Throwdown! South Park vs. Walnut Hills!

DSCI0654

Bring it on!

Mayor Leitzell’s Walnut Hills neighborhood has challenged South Park to a friendly competition to see which of these two Dayton neighborhoods can do the most recycling. The City of Dayton wants to increase recycling from 300 tons per month to 345 tons per month. They’re asking us to encourage our friends to go online or call and ask for their big blue bins! It’s all explained in this article from the Dayton Daily News!

Please help spread the word! If your neighbor doesn’t have a “big blue bin” ask them if they’d like to sign up at http://www.recycledayton.org/

You know, this is a perfect example of how we can change the world for the better if we try. And we don’t have to tell you, no matter who wins, we all win. I like that!

Did You Know? Alley Sweeps can be Fun!

Although we all know how satisfying it is to finish a big cleaning project in our house, garage or attic, you may be surprised to know that it can also be fun. When I was a girl, my mother put loud lively music on the stereo and we all rocked out while doing our chores.

You’ve probably realized by now that folks who live in South Park like to have fun when they get together. It just happens that way. So evening a large-scale clean up project like an alley sweep–a way to let the world know trash and vagrancy will not be tolerated–can be a good time with friends. Here are some photos from the June 5th effort, which ended at the South Park Tavern!
